MiG-29, Tactical Fighter
The aircraft is designed to defeat air targets primarily within the radar range, as well as to destroy ground targets using unguided weapons under the conditions of optical visibility. Air intakes can be closed, thus reducing the risk of foreign objects being thrown into engines during ground operation, which is especially important when operating from unequipped airfields and parking areas. Combining the radar and the KOLS system makes the suite unique in terms of performance. Data exchange between the radar and the IRST system has considerably increased the overall interference immunity of the aircraft sighting system. It takes a mere second for the helmet-mounted target designator, used to quickly lock on visually detected targets, to send target data to the IR surveillance and tracking radar or directly to the homing head of the missile ensuring accuracy, enough to effectively employ the weapon. The weapons suite of the aircraft includes the GSh-301 built-in gun and the R-27R1 and R-73E air-to-air missiles. The unguided weapons load is attached to six hard-points. The MiG-29UB Combat trainer aircraft is designed to teach and master piloting skills, air target interception and ground target engagement within the range of altitudes and speeds of the MiG-29 fighter. The aircraft is also capable of performing specific missions on its own or as part of a group of MiG-29s, using the IRST, the helmet-mounted target designator, R-73E missiles, and the GSh-301 gun. What differs the MiG-29UB from the combat version is a twin-seat cockpit configuration, lack of the radar sighting system and R-27R1 missiles.
